D. Ramaiah obtained Ph. D. degree in Chemistry in 1988 from the Indian Institute of Technology (I.I.T.), Kanpur. He joined as a Scientist at the then Regional Research Laboratory, CSIR, Trivandrum in 1988 and has been associated with the Photosciences and Photonics since its inception. He was till recently heading the Chemical Sciences and Technology Division of the CSIR-NIIST, Trivandrum.
Ramaiah was a Post-doctoral Fellow at the University of Würzburg, Germany and Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta and Visiting Scientist at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Padova, Italy, French Atomic Energy Commission, Grenoble, France, School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA, Institute of Pharmacy, University of Mainz, Germany and Advanced Chemical Research Centre, University of Barcelona, Spain.
He was a recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, Germany (1992-1993); Bronze Medal of the Chemical Research Society of India (2003), Prof. Anantharaman Memorial Lecture Award (2005), Outstanding Performance Award of NIIST, Trivandrum (2007-2008 and 2008-2009). He has been elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences (2009) and awarded Medal of the Materials Research Society of India for 2010. He is currently Associate Editor of Photochemistry and Photobiology (since January 2009) and Council Member of the Chemical Research Society of India.
Ramaiah has published around 90 papers in peer reviewed international journals, contributed 70 papers in national and international conferences and filed / obtained 15 national and international patents. So far 12 Ph. D and 25 M. Sc students have been graduated under his guidance and currently 2 Post-doctoral Fellows and 12 students are working under his supervision for the Ph. D. degree. His current research interests include photochemistry of multichromophoric organic systems, design of DNA cleaving agents, molecular probes for nucleotides and sensitizers for photodynamic therapeutical applications.
